Engineering is a division of the Office of Administration. The Engineering Division has 3 full-time employees with more than 45 years of combined experience in West Milford. The Engineering Division is responsible for the planning, survey, design and construction of infrastructure projects and Township owned facilities including roads, storm drains, parking lots, Township properties, dams, bridges, and traffic signals. We also provide technical assistance and engineering expertise to other Township departments, boards and committees, maintain the Township tax maps and review and inspect residential lot development plans.
The Township of West Milford is responsible for 150 miles of paved Township roads and 6 miles of unpaved Township roads. In addition, there are 38 miles of non-Township and private roads, of which 15 miles are unpaved. The Engineering Division is responsible for the design and inspection of Township road projects. This includes the annual road resurfacing, crack seal and guide rail programs, the annual New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Municipal Aid Program and any road assessment projects.
In 2019, the Township Council appropriated new capital funding for road improvements and we were able to resurface and provide Municipal Storm Water Permit upgrades and storm drainage improvements, where required. In addition, the NJDOT Municipal Aid grant construction contract for Awosting Road – Section 2 and Canistear Road – Section 3 were awarded and provided for roadway resurfacing and storm drainage improvements between Greenwood Lake Turnpike and East Shore Road and Route 23 and Henderson Road, respectively. In total, capital funding accounted for 7.77 miles of road improvements. Assistance was provided to the Recreation Department for athletic field rehabilitation as part of the Farrell Field Soccer Field Rehabilitation Project and for the roof replacement project at the Recreation Center. Assistance was provided to the Department of Public Works for improvements to Township stormwater infrastructure and drainage improvement projects. Two Municipal State Aid grants were successfully procured in 2018 totaling $505,000 for future improvements to Clinton Road and Ridge Road while 2019 grant applications were submitted for other potential Township road improvement projects. In total, the Engineering Division was involved whole or in part with 2.2 million dollars of local capital infrastructure projects.
