The Tax Assessor is responsible for the fair assessment of all property in the municipality in order that the tax burden be distributed equitably.  The Tax Assessor's Office is responsible for many activities to that end.  The correct ownership, mailing address and property location for each parcel of property located in the Township is maintained and listed on the Tax List, as well as the current assessment.  The Tax List, as well as the tax maps, are available during office hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM.  The Tax Assessor's Office is also responsible for taxable value, equalization, defense of appeals, building permit inspections for assessment purposes, sub-divisions, special improvement programs, preparation of certified lists of owners within 200 feet of a property for applications to the Planning Board or Board of Adjustment, various deductions and exemptions provided for in the statutes and the continual review of Property Record Cards.

On February 1st of each year the Assessment Department mails "Assessment Notification Postcards" to each property owner in West Milford as outlined in N.J.S.A. 54:4-38.1.    This notification lists the assessment applicable to the current tax year and advises the taxpayer to contact the Assessment Department if they have any questions regarding their assessment.  The postcard also gives instructions concerning the tax appeal process and the deadline for filing an appeal with the Passaic County Tax Board.  Tax Appeal forms can be picked up at the Tax Assessor's Office anytime after February 1st.  The tax appeals must be filed with the Passaic County Tax Board no later than April 1st.

The Tax Assessor's Office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM.
