West Milford Twp. covers over 80 square miles, with 255 miles of roadway. While the Police Department investigates an average of 900 motor vehicle accidents per year, this unit responds to only 5 - 10 accidents per year, those that are considered major or life threatening.

The West Milford Accident Investigation Unit is comprised of 2 teams with four officers in each team.  The teams are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  These 8 officers have been trained for Accident Investigation through several schools.  These include The Institute of Police Technology and Management (University of North Florida), Northwestern University Traffic Institute, Texas A&M University Systems, and New Jersey State Police.  Officers must complete more than 400 hours of school to be considered an “Accident Reconstructionist”.  Several of the officers also have specialties including motorcycle or pedestrian accidents.  Through debris evidence, road markings (skids, gouges, etc.), and scientific calculations, they reconstruct the accident to find the causes and/or fault of the crash.

Team members average more than 11 years of police experience and have investigated more than one thousand accidents.   Some officers have testified in Passaic and Hudson County Superior Courts as experts in their field.

This unit works in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department

Members of the unit are   Lt. Anthony Parrello,  Lt. Eric Darnsteadt, Sgt. Casey Casbarro, Sgt. Stephen Herzog, Det. Donald Fantasia, P.O. Michael Weber and P.O. Collin Beard.
