West Milford Health Department annually licenses twenty-eight recreational bathing facilities that serve lake associations, pools, spas and youth camps throughout the township.  All facilities are inspected prior to opening and at least once during operation to ensure compliance with the sanitary and safety regulations of the New Jersey State Sanitary Code, NJAC 8:26 a copy is available at http://www.state.nj.us/health/eoh/phss/recbathing.pdf Microbiological Water Quality Standards Lake Bathing:  Fecal coliform (f.c.) shall not exceed 200 per 100 milliliters.  Fecal coliform is the standard test for the presence of E. coli. Swimming Pools:  Standard Plate Count (S.P.C.) less than 200 colonies per one milliliter sample and total coliform (t.c.) less than one organism per 100 milliliter.  Total coliform is the standard test for drinking water. Hot tubs and spas:  Standard Plate Count (S.P.C.) less than 200 colonies per one milliliter sample and less than 1 Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pseud.) per 100 milliliter sample.
