West Milford Domestic Violence Response Team

Domestic Violence is a pattern of non-consensual behaviors that causes fear, emotional, financial, sexual or physical harm/assault or restricts another's freedom, rights, or privacy.  These behaviors are perpetrated by someone who is or was involved in an intimate relationship, a family member or a household member.

The West Milford Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) is a team of civilian volunteers that provide information, referrals, support and comfort to victims of domestic violence within the West Milford Police headquarters.  The West Milford DVRT is a program guided by the Passaic County Women's Center, in collaboration with the West Milford Police Department.

The DVRT members have undergone a state mandated 40-hour training in domestic violence.  Volunteers are on call 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.  Members are contacted when a victim reports an incident of domestic violence to the West Milford Police.  The officer will ask the victim if s/he wishes to speak with a DVRT member at the West Milford Police Headquarters.

The DVRT members provide confidential conversation, comfort, and support in a private and secure environment.  The volunteers are there to listen and provide information, referrals and options.  Members provide information on creating a personalized safety plan.  They can explain what a temporary restraining order (TRO) is, how to obtain a TRO and how it can work to protect a victim.  Volunteers may provide information about Passaic County Women's Center crisis services and local social service agencies.

Passaic County Women's Center (PCWC), a private non-profit organization, was established in 1986.  PCWC has expanded it's services from being the county designated shelter to include a variety of programs addressing the complexity of domestic violence and sexual assault/abuse.

PCWC's services are accessible through the 24-hour hotline 973-881-1450.  The domestic violence program provides shelter for women and their children, individual and group counseling, accompaniment, legal advocacy and accompaniments.  The sexaul assault program provides crisis intertvention, information and referrral services, accompaniments during medical attention and criminal justice procedures, and individual/group counseling for survivors.  All of the services are free and confidential.
