   Engineering is a division of the Department of Public Works & Engineering.  The Township Engineer is the department head for the Department of Public Works & Engineering, which includes 33 full-time and 5 part-time employees and consists of the following 5 divisions:

                                         1. Division of Engineering
                                         2. Division of Public Property
                                         3. Division of Streets and Roads
                                         4. Division of Storm Sewers and Drains
                                         5. Division of Recycling and Solid Waste

     The Division of Engineering has 4 full-time employees (which includes the Township Engineer) with more than 50 years of combined experience in West Milford and serves in support of the duties of the Township Engineer.  The Township Engineer serves as the engineer for the Zoning Board of Adjustment and as the staff member of the Planning Board and the Energy Committee.  The Division of Engineering is responsible for the planning, survey, design and construction of public works projects and publicly owned facilities including roads, storm drains, parks, buildings, parking lots, dams, etc.  We also provide technical assistance and engineering expertise to other Township departments, boards and committees, maintain the Township tax maps and review and inspect all residential and commercial site plans.  In 2008, 48 site plans were reviewed and inspected, compared to 85 site plans in 2007.  The Engineering Division is the lead agency for Damage Assessment for the Office of Emergency Management with the Township Engineer serving as the Damage Assessment Coordinator.

     The Township of West Milford currently has 149 miles of paved Township roads and 6 miles of unpaved Township roads.  In addition, there are 38 miles of private and non-Township roads, of which 15 miles are unpaved.  The Engineering Division is responsible for the design and inspection of all Township road projects.  This includes the annual road resurfacing, crack seal and guide rail programs, the annual New Jersey Department of Transportation municipal aid program and any road assessment projects.

     In 2007, the Township Council provided funding for road improvements and we were able to resurface and or reconstruct and provide storm drain improvements, where required, for 5.4 miles of Township roads.  The onset of winter suspended the 2008 paving program and the remaining funds will provide for additional road improvements in 2009.  The Engineering Division completed the 2009 application for Cahill Cross Road and was successful in obtaining $301,000 for this NJDOT municipal aid project.  A $200,000 Bikeway grant was also recieved for Westbrook Road, between Ridge Road and Macopin Road.  West Milford is one of only 19 municipalities in New Jersey that received grants under the Bikeway program.
